What a difference a year can make.....

I clearly remember the emotions that were running through my head exactly one year ago. I can see Travis, Emerson, and my myself playing in her pre-op room trying to "not think" about what the next few hours would hold. As they wheeled Emerson away to surgery, I felt so uneasy but tried to remain strong! I remember sitting in the PCICU waiting room for hours getting hourly check-ups from the PA that was assisting in E's surgery. My mom asked him every question that she could think of (not related to Emerson)to try to get our mind's off of the operation. I brought a pile of books and magazines to read but couldn't focus enough to read one word. Finally the moment came when John, the PA came back and told us that Emerson was out of surgery and they we would be able to visit her in an hour. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders, all of our prayers had been answered!!
I entered the PCICU with no idea what to expect. All I knew was that I was going to see my baby. The moment I saw her with all the machines, tubes, wires, and beeps/sounds I knew that the recovery was going to be much more than what I expected. The next 8 days were the toughest days of my life. Travis and I basically camped out in the PCICU because we didn't want to miss one thing! I was amazed how knowledgeable and caring the nurses and doctors were to our baby.
On day 8 of our stay, we were told that Emerson was ready for discharge and that she would be able to join our family back at home. I was anxious to bring her home yet afraid because she was so fragile. In the next few days at home, Emerson's strength was quickly building and she was soon back to her happy self. We were able to celebrate Easter/her homecoming with some special family members. It was such a happy day!

As I look back to this past year, I am so very grateful for all the life lessons, strength, and determination that Little E has shown me. I have learned so much this past year that has made be become a better person.
I am the proud mommy to one special little girl! :-)

Happy One Year Anniversary to my special girl! And to think that these heart surgeries weren't even done on DS children until the 1980's (per Amy Van Bergen). Look what all those parents missed :(
Love from E's Grammy
